On mention of that fairy- like, and my description
My confidante ultimately turned into my rival.
Explanation/Comment:
This ‘sher’ talks of the effect of the description of his beloved’s beauty on his confidante.
Ghalib says that on mention of his beloved, and the manner in which he described her, the result was not what he expected. He thought his confidante would understand his anguish and help him find a way to reach his beloved. Rather than doing so, his confidante got so enamoured by his description that he too fell in love with her and became Ghalib’s rival.
This ‘sher’ describes both the beauty of his beloved and the beauty of Ghalib’s description of her beauty.
Lesson number 1: Don’t fall in love with someone so beautiful.
Lesson number 2: Don’t be too lavish in her praise with even your closest friend.
Lesson number 3: Anticipate your closest friend to turn against you in matters of love.
Lesson number 4: All caution be damned. Fall in love with someone for whom even your confidante will turn your rival!
Love is for the brave hearted and the flamboyant, not the ever-cautimus and the weak-kneed!
