(DG 21:7: 129)
Meaning
Even though sorrow is life threatening.
one cannot escape it since the heart is involved
If the sorrow of love were not to be,
the worries of living would replace it
Explanation/Comment:
Ghalib makes a very strong case for the inevitability of sorrow in a person’s life.
He talks of the sorrow in his life, which is life threatening, but which he cannot escape, since it’s a matter of his heart. Sorrow is integral to love, for who has found unalloyed happiness in it?
But there is some solace too. For, if it were not for this life-threatening sorrow of love, there would be the hassles of every day life anyways. which are equally life draining.
Hence, sorrow, of some form or the other, is integral to the very existence of human kind. So why grieve over sorrow? Why not accept it, if not welcome it?
